Principle of operation

VGA has following parts
Text Box: Two peristaltic pumps with twin channels are employed to pump the reagents. Pump-1 is used to pump the reagents viz. Ch-1 Acid & Ch-2 Boro Hydride , while pump-2 is used to pump the sample. Only one channel Ch-1 is used in pump-1. One end of the peristaltic pump tubing is connected to the reservoir & the other end to the mixing manifold. The mixing manifold has 4 inputs & one output. 

However for analysis on the AAS only three inputs are used viz. Acid, Boro-Hydride & Sample. The fourth input is plugged. The output of the manifold terminates into the fine bore Teflon tubing rolled into a coil. This coil is referred to as the reaction column. The output of the reaction column terminates into the glass gas liquid separator. The reaction that ultimately results in the metal hydride occurs during the time the liquid travels along the Teflon coil. The resulting metal hydride is in the form of a gas. 

The gas liquid separator is basically a WERN pump. The liquid phase is separated from the gas phase. A stream of carrier gas (typically nitrogen) flushes the metal hydride thus formed. This metal hydride is carried into a quartz tube placed directly in the optical path on the burner. The resulting waste liquid is drained continuously.
